The district's chief financial officer, Gary Kraemer, will present a plan to trustees and make recommendations to reduce their budget by more than $9.8 million. A staff report states that the decrease will "adversely impact teaching and learning and district and school operations."
To address the reductions, Kraemer will suggest that the district:
• return $2.25 million in SB185 grant funds that would have been designated for school improvements.
• increase expenditures by $500,000 for a contingency for SB185.
• decrease textbook and instructional supply expenditures by $4.25 million.
• reduce the amount of Other Postemployment Benefits by $3 million.
• reduce the district office administration by $300,000.
• and decrease the fund balance of the district's general fund by more than $550,000.
Also at the meeting, a discussion of the implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI) will explore WCSD's plans to monitor and help struggling students. The plan assesses core instruction, identifying students in need of academic aid and using data to help meet those needs.
The district-adopted RTI began using RTI as a means of evaluation of academic and non-academic indicators to better assist the individual student.
Other items on today's agenda are a potential approval of a funding reallocation for Americans with Disabilities projects at five elementary schools.
A consent item includes the possible appointment of two parent representatives to the Sexuality, Health and Responsibility Education (SHARE) Advisory Committee. Members serve on three-year staggered terms and attend monthly meetings. Two community members have applied for these positions.
The meeting is at 4 p.m. at the Washoe County School District Administration Building at 425 E. Ninth St. in Reno.
