A classic pither’s duel reigned for most of the evening, with both clubs trading zeros through the game’s first seven innings. In the top of the eighth, Adam Eaton singled to right, breaking up Tacoma starter Hector Noesi’s no-hit bid. The Aces didn’t manage to convert the hit into a run, though.
Meanwhile, Aces starter Joe Martinez worked six shutout frames, scattering two hits. In the bottom of the eighth, though, the Rainiers finally touched-up the scoreboard, pushing across the game’s only two runs on a Mike Wilson home run off Sam Demel.
Martinez took a hard-luck no decision, while Demel (1-4) was pinned with the loss out of the Reno bullpen.
Noesi likewise took a no-decision, despite allowing just one hit with 11 strikeouts over 7.2 scoreless frames. The win went to Rainiers reliever Shawn Kelley (2-0), who kept Reno off the scoreboard over the game’s final 1.1 innings.
The game marked the first time in club history the Aces were held to fewer than two hits. Adam Eaton stole his Pacific Coast League-leading 36th bag of the season.
The Aces and Rainiers hook-up again on Sunday. RHP Daniel Cabrera (0-0, No ERA) takes the ball for Reno, while LHP Danny Hultzen (1-2, 4.71 ERA) counters for Tacoma. First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m. PT, and the action can be listened to live on Fox Sports 630 AM or by visiting RenoAces.com.
