LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas organization that focuses on controlling southern Nevada’s feral cat population says it’s reached a major milestone.

The Community Cat Coalition of Clark County tells KLAS-TV it sent its 10,000th cat to be fixed on Wednesday.

The group, also known as C5, has been working since 2010 to trap the wild cats, get them spayed or neutered, and release them back into the open. They say the effort keeps cats out of shelters where they might be euthanized.

C5 President Keith Williams says the Las Vegas area has about 300,000 feral cats. The population is boosted by a warm climate that allows for mating year-round, and by the foreclosure crisis that saw many pet owners leaving their cats behind.
