More than 3,600 Sparks homes lost power briefly Tuesday morning after a driver lost control of his vehicle and knocked down a power pole at Vista Boulevard and S. Los Altos Parkway.

At about 6:30 a.m., an 18-year-old male Sparks resident lost control of his black pickup truck on an icy road and slammed into a power pole, causing several lines to fall, according to a release from Sparks Police Sgt. Pat Dyer. Power was restored to most of the homes by about 7 a.m., according to Faye Anderson of NV Energy. Power at 25 homes that were near the accident was uncertain Tuesday afternoon.

The driver’s head hit the windshield and he bent the steering column with his chest, Dyer said. The driver was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Dyer said the driver was traveling too fast for the icy road and police believe he was not wearing a seatbelt. Despite his injuries, the driver was conscious and able to speak to police after the accident, Dyer said.
