After one day of the state wrestling tournaments, six Rail City wrestlers were still alive in their journeys toward a state championship.

Reed senior Brandon Gebhardt finished that journey on top Saturday by winning the 189-pound state title for the second straight year.

For the second straight week, Gebhardt had to face Bishop Manogue's Evan Miller in the finals. This time Gebhardt could not pin Miller but he was more in control of the match and pulled out a 4-2 victory.

Coach Ric Fehr thinks Gebhardt is now the most successful wrestler in the east Sparks school's history with the two state crowns.

Gebhardt wasn't alone atop the podium.

Spanish Springs freshman continued to make a big splash at the high school level by capping a 51-4 campaign with a state championship at the 103-pound weight class.

Lampert was barely threatened as he combined to win his first two matches by a 26-9 score before a third-round pin over Sean Miller of Foothill gave him the gold.

Spanish Springs junior Todd Pearson was so close to making it a double for the Cougars but had to settle for second place at 112 pounds after a 5-3 loss to Reno's Bo Bettinson in the title match.

Chris White and Clay Coleman were the other Cougars who picked up one win apiece at 171 and 189 pounds respectively.

The Raiders also did not have much success outside of Gebhardt.

Matt Roberto won a single match in the heavyweights, but he and Reece Dassinger ran into some bad luck as a pair of No. 1 seeds from McQueen dropped their opening matches and had to face the two Raiders in the losers' bracket.

"The state championship makes up for a lot, but it's disappointing, particularly for Reece and Matt. They were doing well," Fehr said. "I didn't expect them to be in the finals because their weights were tough."

As a team, Spanish Springs accumulated 43 points, which was good enough for sixth place, while Reed took 15th with 25 points. Cimarron-Memorial won the team championship by a healthy margin over second-place Las Vegas.

•In the 3A wrestling championships, also held at the Winnemucca Events Center, a pair of Railroaders reached the championship matches, only to lose to a couple Spring Creek grapplers.

John Stralla (119) suffered a 16-0 tech fall loss to Cameron Hopper, and heavyweight Ian Butler was pinned by Andrew Nash.

Sparks' Jacob Miller also placed. He finished fourth at 130 pounds.

The Maroon and Gold's 45 points earned them an eighth-place finish in the team standings.
