SPARKS — Sparks Police Department detectives arrested and charged Elmo Montoya for Battery with a Deadly Weapon on Tuesday after continued investigation of his altercation with Brando Flores on July 4 in the 400 block of 12th Street.
Montoya, 39, stabbed Flores multiple times at about 11:35 p.m. following the Star Spangled Sparks event in downtown Sparks. Detectives concluded that Montoya stabbed Flores once before pursuing him and stabbing him once more. Montoya also unintentionally stabbed his 13-year-old son.
According to the SPD. the victim is believed to have been intoxicated and attempted to provoke a fight with the 13-year-old boy using gang terminology. The boys father, Montoya, came to his aid and began a physical fight with Flores. Detectives said a number of witnesses provided information that Flores provoked the altercation and may have produced the knife. The young boy was treated for superficial wounds.
Flores is now recovering at Renown Medical Center and his injuries no longer appear as serious as police originally thought.
