On the agenda was the review of land for possible rezoning at the intersection of Pyramid Highway and Calle de la Plata. This item was pulled from the agenda prior to the start of the meeting because the applicant had removed the item.
The board said that the issue will be discussed at a future meeting.
Community Outreach Coordinator Lorrie Adams provided the CAB with an update about issues affecting the county.
“As you know, the county has made a $10 million budget cut,” Adams said. “That gets us through June.”
Adams somberly gave the board a breakdown of where the money was being cut from, including 1.25 percent that was being cut from the public safety, 5.5 percent from county administration and, the hardest hit, parks and library funding with a 7.5-percent cut.
“I do know there will be addition cuts,” Adams said. “I just don’t know what those would be.”
Moving away from the gloomy news of budget shortfalls, board member Ed Goodrich told the board and residents in attendance that the Sparks Citizens Advisory Committee has a new chairman, Keith Primus.
Goodrich also explained that the Sparks CAC has changed its meeting location from the Sparks Police Department to the Larry Johnson Community Center. Meetings will be held on the first Thursday of the month at 6 p.m.
Addressing old business, the board asked for progress on the stop sign installation on Cordoba Boulevard.
John Bilka, president of the Sky Ranch North Homeowners Association, said that Washoe County installed a four-way stop last week at the intersection of Cordoba and East Sky Ranch boulevards.
The residents in the neighborhood were concerned about students from the nearby Spanish Springs Elementary School that had to cross the intersection while dodging speeding vehicles. There were no crosswalks at the intersection until November 2008.
“It has taken over a year to get this done,” Bilka said about the project. “All we asked for were two stop signs. Commissioner Bob Larkin has been a ton of support and helps guide us through this.”
In addition, the board voted unanimously, 5-0, with members Vaughn Hartung and Greg Prough absent, to move the CAB’s July 8 and Aug. 12 meetings from the Lazy 5 Regional Park Community Building to the Lazy 5 Library to avoid conflicting with the summer outdoor concerts held in the park. Meetings will still begin at 7 p.m.
The next Spanish Springs CAB meeting will be held March 11 at 7 p.m. at the Lazy 5 Regional Park Community Building.
