Discussions about the future of the Regional Transportation Commission’s services, including Sierra Spirit, RTC RIDE and Access, will take place at meetings today and Thursday.

During today’s joint Reno City Council and Redevelopment Agency meeting, the council is scheduled to consider directing staff to look into possible funding assistance for the downtown Sierra Spirit free bus service.

The RTC board previously approved a reduction of one bus from Sierra Spirit and the shortening of the route. The free, yellow buses now travel along Virginia Street from the University of Nevada, Reno to Second Street. These cuts are effective March 1.

The council meeting takes place today at the Reno City Council Chamber at 1 E. First St. at 2 p.m.

On Thursday, RTC governing board members will consider reductions to RTC RIDE and Access in light of budget shortfalls.

Access provides transportation for the disabled. Other proposals include the increase of fares or the elimination of service outside the mandated Americans With Disabilities Act zone with a fare increase to $2 per ticket.

The RTC board meeting takes place at the Regional Transportation Center at 2050 Villanova Drive on Thursday at 9 a.m.
