SPARKS — A 45-year-old man was arrested Saturday for allegedly trying to choke his elderly mother to death.

Dean Kelly Archie was arrested by Sparks police who reportedly found him on the couch strangling his mother. Officers had responded to a call just before 8 p.m. about a loud disturbance at 2868 Laguna Way possibly involving an intoxicated man. When officers arrived they were confronted by Archie who was belligerent and threatened to shoot officers. Archie disregarded police orders and went back in the house where his elderly mother was located.

Police tried to negotiate with Archie but he became more volatile. Officers learned that Archie might be harming his mother so they entered the house and found him strangling his elderly mother on a sofa and holding an aluminum can. Officers took Archie into custody while his mother was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.

Archie has been charged with domestic battery with strangulation, false imprisonment, kidnapping and coercion. He is being held at Washoe County jail with no bail.
