Friends of the man, who has not been identified pending notification of next of kin, called the police at about 9 p.m. Saturday. The victim had been inner tubing with friends on the Truckee River throughout the day and was last seen in the area of Oxbow Park in Reno. After searching for the victim themselves, the friends called the police and a search was initiated by Reno police, Reno fire and Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. Reno police officers soon located and recovered the victim’s body from the river in the area of Idlewild Park.
The death appears to be the result of an accidental drowning, according to police. With the onset of summer, the Reno Police Department reminds the community to be cautious of strong currents and low temperatures of the Truckee River. Those participating in water activities on the river are encouraged to use proper safety equipment, including life vests.
