The Nevada Highway Patrol says officers were concerned for the group's safety on the busy freeway interchange. When the man's fiance refused several requests to leave, she was taken into custody as a precaution.
She was later released and no charges are pending.
The standoff began around midnight Friday and ended about eight hours later.
Police say the man likely shot himself after authorities fired tear gas into his car in an effort to get him to surrender.
An autopsy is pending.
The man's name has not been released.
