Ambitious, perhaps, but when you consider how far the L.A.-based underground duo has come with their own clothing line, TV appearances and numerous club hits like “I’m In Miami, Bitch!”, it’s left many wondering when the party is coming.
And now, having used mainly word of mouth, daily YouTube videos and an ever-expanding MySpace page that boasts 2 million play hits, LMFAO is bringing the global party to Reno at the Grand Sierra Resort’s Pearl Lounge on Saturday night.
Two years ago, the party was still just getting started. Both Hollywood locals, Sky Blu and his uncle RedFoo, could be found spinning at night clubs, bringing their experimental electronic style to the mainstream dance scene.
Before long, both RedFoo and Sky Blu started mixing their own beats, courtesy of a makeshift, at-home recording studio, some mixed tapes and their quirky, often off-color humor. Thus, “I’m in Miami, Bitch!” hit MySpace, bringing some sass and a fun, comedic spin that would eventually become their signature style.
Once the tireless videos and self-produced tracks caught on (which includes the likes of “Lil Hipster Girl” and “I’m Not a Whore”), LMFAO caught the attention of Interscope Records, launching their independent careers to the status of recognizable, if not big time.
With their large, funky, lensless glasses, even larger hair and pimp-style jackets, recognition is their strong point. They have even gone as far as to launch their own Party Rock clothing line that features T-shirts emblazoned with gold chains and their afro silhouettes.
LMFAO is certainly turning goofing around into a hit-making process while earning their name, derived from the Internet abbreviation for laughing one’s rear end off.
For example, their song “I’m Not A Whore” stems from a pick-up scheme that both RedFoo and Sky Blu used on unsuspecting women. As RedFoo explained in a previous interview, when women would compliment their hair or outfits, both jokesters would reply, “Just because you’re giving me compliments, doesn’t mean I’ll sleep with you. I’m not a whore.”
They swear the line worked.
Feeling confident, LMFAO tackled their next endeavor — remixing Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown,” and thereby making the already beat-filled and synthesized song more dance ready.
Again, both the YouTube and blog worlds exploded, creating a buzz about this duo. And understandably so, since they remixed an artist that boasts himself as one of the greatest things to happen to music today.
Now, with a full-length album, “Party Rock,” scheduled to fittingly debut this year on April Fool’s day, LMFAO has taken off, discussing single remix opportunities with such popular dance music artists like Lady Gaga and Chris Cornell.
From MTV appearances to making their own trends, LMFAO is stopping for no one.
