RENO — The 2012 Justice James Hardesty Leadership Award honoring the top Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) cadet in the Washoe County School District was presented to Cadet Major Randy Bylund on May 24 by Nevada Supreme Court Justice James W. Hardesty.

The award was created in 2005 by the Washoe County School District ROTC and named for Justice Hardesty, who served as the district’s brigade commander in 1966. The award is given each year to the ROTC cadet who best exemplifies leadership qualities among all of the ROTC cadets in the school district.

Cadet Major Bylund is a senior at Reno High School. Justice Hardesty noted that the recipient is the son of Albert Bylund, who was a classmate of Justice Hardesty at Hunter Lake Elementary School. Albert Bylund is a Reno resident and architect who now works for the Department of Homeland Security.
