FERNLEY — Russell Morton, 55, of Fernley was traveling west in the left travel lane on Interstate 80 Thursday evening when, for unknown reasons, his red 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle left the lane and struck a section of guardrail next to the edge of the roadway near the Orchard Interchange. Morton was ejected from the bike, and he sustained fatal injuries.

Morton was pronounced dead at the scene when Nevada Highway Patrol troopers arrived abut 8:40 p.m.

Several family members were at the crash scene shortly after the tragedy happened and were briefed about their loss.

NHP closed both lanes of the freeway for nearly 90 minutes while they completed their on-scene portion of the investigation. All lanes were cleared and reopened by 11 p.m.
