LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 57-year-old woman who was helping a dog struck in a Las Vegas roadway is dead after being hit by a vehicle.
Authorities say Valerie Marie Roberts had stopped her PT Cruiser and put on the hazard lights about 10 p.m. Wednesday while helping another person aid a dog on Boulder Highway north of Sun Valley Drive.
Las Vegas police say the driver of an approaching car swerved to avoid hitting the stopped car but instead hit the woman, who was standing in the center lane on the side of her car.
She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The 47-year-old driver of the Dodge Charger that hit her was not injured.
Officials say this is the 58th traffic-related death so far this year in Las Vegas police jurisdiction.
