RENO (AP) — A judge has declared a mistrial after jurors deliberating charges against a man charged in the death of a Sparks toddler said they are deadlocked on a verdict.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports Washoe District Judge Steven Kosach declared a mistrial Tuesday after jurors who had been deliberating for three weeks were unable to reach a verdict in the case against 23-year-old Kevin Anthony Hunt.

Hunt is accused of fatally injuring Malakai Dean when he was alone with the boy for a brief time in February 2010. He was charged with child abuse causing death.

Hunt’s attorneys denied that the boy died of child abuse-related injuries.
