Tribune/John Byrne - University of Nevada, Reno, President Marc Johnson shakes hands with Andrea Sanford at Reno High School on Tuesday as she and Jade Eriksen (left) and Quinn Campbell all commit to attending UNR. Sanford and Eriksen are National Merit Scholarship finalists and Quinn is a Presidential Scholar. Other Reno High students who signed Tuesday were Gabriel Sheehy and Zachary Thompson, both Presidential Scholars.
The university is partnering with area high schools in ceremonies reminiscent of high school athletes’ “signing days” to acknowledge the decision of these “best and brightest” scholars to pursue their college degree in Nevada.
The fourth annual signing-day ceremonies kicked off Monday with events at Carson and Douglas High Schools. One National Merit Scholarship Finalist and five Presidential Scholars were recognized in the signing-day ceremony at Carson High in Carson City and one National Merit Scholarship Finalist and three Presidential Scholars were recognized at the Douglas High ceremony later in the morning in Minden. These 10 scholars will be joined by many more who will “sign” from various Washoe, Churchill, Lyon and Clark County schools over the next couple of weeks.
