FALLON — Fire officials say a 17,500-acre wildfire burning in a remote northern Nevada range is threatening prime habitat for sage grouse and mule deer.
Helen Frazier of the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center says the fire that began Wednesday is burning on the south slope of the Augusta Range about 70 miles northeast of Fallon.
No homes have been threatened, and no injuries have been reported.
Frazier says the area is so remote and lacking in roads that it has been a challenge getting firefighters to the scene.
But with cooler temperatures and lighter winds Friday, firefighters are reporting progress as the blaze is 50 percent contained.
Frazier says the fire primarily is burning invasive, highly combustible cheatgrass in the same area where a wildfire occurred about a decade ago.
