A team of UNR Mechanical Engineering and Research faculty students were on hand Thursday morning at Dilworth Stem Academy in Sparks to help the students fill their 5-foot in diameter hydrogen-filled weather balloons. A total of 10 balloons in all were launched, each carrying 12 pounds of experiments that included solar dust collectors, cockroaches and blood. The students’ experiments involved testing what affects low-pressure, high radiation and extreme would have on their payloads.
The weather balloons that are capable of soaring to heights of 120,000 feet were equipped with GPS tracking units and light beacons and a spot tracking location device to help with the recovery process.
