At the Northern Region Swimming & Diving Championships held Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Facility in Carson City, Reed senior Kyle Scalise and the swimmer with the top seed time attempted to defend his regional title in the 100-yard breaststroke, but was outstretched at the wall by Truckee’s Alex Straw.

Scalise’s time of 58.99 seconds was .07 seconds slower than Straw.

However, Scalise didn’t go home empty-handed. Scalise was a double winner a year ago, but didn’t compete in the 200-yard IM this year. Instead, he left everyone in his wake to win the 50-yard freestyle in 21.80 seconds, nearly a second better than the closest competitor.

Spanish Springs’ Jared Means was in the same 100-yard breaststroke race and took sixth. Only the top three finishers in each race qualify for this week’s state meet at UNLV though.

Means nearly helped the Cougars reach state in the 400-yard freestyle relay, but the team finished fourth. He was also part of the fifth-place 200-yard freestyle relay squad. He barely missed out on his own shot to represent the Purple and Silver at state by swimming to a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard IM after his seed time would have put him in third. Teammate Reed Parkhurst was seventh in the race.

There will be a couple Rail City divers representing the North at state.

Spanish Springs’ Walter Lee was second out of three divers with 331.85 points in the boys competition, while Reed’s Amy Wantanabe was third on the girls side with the 298.95 points.

In the girls meet, local schools earned a couple fifth-place finishes. The Reed girls 200-yard medley relay touched the wall in 2:01.62. Spanish Springs senior Melina Blondfield was fifth (58.65 seconds) in the girls 100-yard freestyle.

McKenzie Clemens of Spanish Springs claimed sixth in the girls 100-yard breaststroke.
