The Reno Huskies used a dominant fourth quarter to knock off the Douglas Tigers 69-53 and capture their second 4A North Region title in three years.

Reno took a five-point lead into the final eight minutes but outscored Douglas 21-10 in the last quarter of Saturday night’s boys basketball regional championship game at Spanish Springs High School.

Reno and Douglas will both open state tournament play Thursday at Lawlor Events Center on the University of Nevada campus in Reno.

Reno grabbed a 50-43 lead just seconds into the fourth period after John Stewart dropped in a runner in the lane. Douglas answered with a 3-pointer from Jeff Nady to get within four, 50-46, at the 7:35 mark of the fourth period.

That’s as good as it got for Douglas. The Tigers did not score for more than three minutes and Reno put together a tell tale run, 9-0. The spurt gave the Huskies a double-digit lead, 59-46. Douglas could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

James McLaughlin followed up his own miss to get Douglas within 10, 61-51, with 3:34 remaining in the contest. Reno outscored its Sierra League foe 8-2 the rest of the way to seal the victory.

Reno got a balanced offensive attack en route to victory. Austin Morgan put up a game-high 21 points for the Huskies while his RHS teammates Olek Czyz and John Stewart each contributed 13 points to the winning cause. Zach Sanford added 10 for Reno.

Nady and David Laird paced Douglas with 18 and 16 points.
