RENO — Hero status isn’t reserved only for those brave men and women who rush into burning buildings or step into the front lines of war.

“There’s a hero in all of us,” said Steve Thomas, donor recruitment director of United Blood Services, the area’s non-profit community blood service provider. “Ordinary people are saving lives every day. They do it before work, after work, while they are on their lunch break or running errands. They have found the hero in themselves by donating blood regularly.

“We asked a donor, a young man, why he gives so consistently three or four times a year,” Thomas said. “He said, ‘It feels so good to save someone’s life. Why would you do it just once?’ ”

To encourage the habit of blood donation, United Blood Services expanded its Hero rewards program. Donors now earn points for donating frequently and staying involved year after year. The points are redeemable for movie passes, restaurant gift certificates and other prizes. Donors can now redeem their rewards online for added ease and convenience.

Potential donors are encouraged to make an appointment to donate blood by going online at or by calling 324-6454. Donors receive a free cholesterol test with every donation. Additionally, since May is UBS’ Pint for a Pint month, all blood donors will receive a pint of super premium ice cream. This pint of ice cream is being provided by Model Dairy and Tahoe Creamery and is available to blood donors donating at any of UBS’ three convenient community donation centers in Reno, Sparks or Carson City.
