RENO — Additional charges have been filed against a convicted sex offender already in custody for an assault against an elderly woman.
Richard Sharks, 54, is charged with home invasion, sexual assault, battery to commit sexual assault and crimes against the elderly stemming from an April 13 incident. Sharks is suspected of forcing his way into the home of an elderly woman in the 700 block of Belli Drive. Police responded to the area on reports of a suspicious person knocking on doors telling the occupants he had their wallet. Officers arrived in the area and saw Sharks exiting one of the residences, pulling his pants up. As an officer was talking to Sharks, RPD received a report of a sexual assault having just occurred at that same house.
The elderly female victim reported she heard a knock on the door and a man saying he had her wallet. She partially opened her door, which had a security chain, and the suspect forced his way in and assaulted her. She was transported to a local hospital and is being treated for her injuries, which are not life threatening.
On Monday, Sharks was charged with another count of burglary, and one count of battery with the intent to commit sexual assault stemming from an incident in the 1000 block of Washington Street on March 10. This case was assigned to the Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit, and upon further investigation Sharks has now been booked for the listed charges in that case.
Sharks is a Tier 3 sex offender, according to police, with convictions from 1988 for battery with the intent to commit sexual assault, and from 1992 and 2001 for open and gross lewdness. He has four prior convictions for sex offender failing to register, change address or provide false information.
