The Sparks softball team travelled to Susanville, Calif. this weekend to compete in the Lassen tournament, but unfortunately for the Railroaders, they dropped all five of their contests.

The Maroon and Gold ladies lost their first contest on Friday 14-0 to Red Bluff High. Sparks then capped the opening day of the tournament with a 9-1 loss to Enterprise from Redding, Calif. and a 9-4 defeat to Oreville. Two more losses followed on Saturday with the Railroaders landing on the wrong end of a 14-0 beating to Lassen and a 7-5 decision to South Tahoe.

“It’s like I’ve said all year, we’re a work in progress,” Sparks coach Frank Avilla said. “We’ve improved dramatically down here. We competed well in the last few games of the tournament. Again, our greenhorn errors just showed through. That’s our youth and those things happen, but we’re getting better. We’re getting a lot better. As a coach, I saw a lot of improvements. It was a very good learning experience for the kids.”

Sparks (4-19, 3-7 Mount Rose League) will close out its season with a doubleheader at home against Truckee on Tuesday with first pitch set for 3 p.m. Despite the fact that the team did not reach the goals it had set for itself at the beginning of the season, Avilla remained optimistic.

“It’s senior day,” Avilla said. “We’re excited about honoring our seniors. We’re going to have a good day and end on a positive note. Who knows, we may just beat Truckee. If the girls can focus, I think we have a good shot.”
