‘Madame Butterfly’ kicked off with culinary throwdown

In celebration of Nevada Opera’s anime-inspired “Madame Butterfly,” chefs will compete in a mixologist culinary throwdown on Friday at the Siena Hotel Spa Casino.

RENO — Chef Mark Estee of Campo and Chef Xavier Leveau of the Siena Hotel Spa Casino will go head to head with mixologists Ivan Fontana of Midtown Eats vand David Serna of Reno Public House on Friday to benefit Nevada Opera.

Cocktails begin at 6 p.m. in the Siena ballroom with duels beginning at 7 p.m. Host Sam Shad turns Reno’s leading culinary and mixology talents into Nevada NewsMakers, with the help of celebrity judges Johnathan Wright of the Reno Gazette-Journal, and TV personalities Karen Todd Griffin and Lise Mousel.

Rising stars from Nevada Opera’s Young Artist program will provide songs and arias about coffee, alcohol and passion in celebration of Nevada Opera’s anime-inspired “Madame Butterfly,” Puccini’s most popular opera, coming to life on May 4 and 6 at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts.

The anime-style visual aspects of this newly conceived production will bring Nevada’s “Madame Butterfly” into the 21st century, while maintaining Nevada Opera’s venerable tradition of sophisticated, first-class productions.
