Reed junior Danielle Peacon took over where she left off Friday night, following up 33-point performance with 20 points in a 63-32 prep girls basketball win over Yerington Saturday.
Less than 24 hours after suffering a difficult double overtime loss at home to Reno, the Raiders were back on the court and eager to move forward.
That's exactly what they did against the visiting Lions.
“I was really glad we had this game because it didn't give them the whole weekend to think about that (Reno) game,” Reed coach Sara Schopper said. “We can move on and we got to work on some things.”
Reed outscored the 3A school by 17-11 and 17-10 margins in the first two quarters of play to take a comfortable lead into the locker room. But it was the third quarter where the Raiders really excelled.
The Blue and Gold opened the second half with a string of six unanswered points, but that run was surpassed with how it closed out the third quarter.
Erica McKenzie scored eight of her 13 points during a 14-0 run that was stopped by Karmen Quintero's third 3-pointer of the game with 18 seconds left on the third-quarter clock. Quintero was the only Lion in double figures. She had 11 points in the loss.
“I was happy because the girls came out and played,” Schopper said. “They could have still been hanging their heads, but they came out, had fun and got after it.”
Reed's offense went silent for nearly four and a half minutes. During that span, Yerington was only able to score three points through the first half of the fourth quarter.
Then it was all Raiders as Kayla Shannon and Honour Knudsen combined for the final seven points of the non-league contest. Knudsen finished with nine points.
For the second straight game, freshman reserve forward Nyasha LeSure was solid in the post and continued to improve. She contributed 10 points to the Raiders' cause.
“Game to game, she's gotten more confidence in herself,” Schopper said of LeSure. “She's a freshman but probably is one of the strongest girls on the team behind Danielle. She knows what she needs to do, but her athletic ability lets her get up and get rebounds. I hope in the next two weeks she gets more confidence because in the long run we're going to need her.”
Reed (11-7) heads to McQueen Tuesday night for a High Desert League battle. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
