RENO — Six dreamers, participants of the DREAM Act for fairer immigration policies and the Campaign for an American DREAM, walked through Reno on their way to Utah Thursday as part of an eight-month trek to engage communities on their way to Washington, D.C.

Five walkers told personal stories about how they didn’t find out they were undocumented and illegally in the United States until they applied for college, according to spokesman for the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada in Reno, Mario DelaRosa. Five of the walkers are undocumented and one is a citizen, he said.

“They told their stories and people were just like ‘wow!’ The things they had to go through because they do’t have these documents. And I’m sure tomorrow is going to be the same,” DelaRosa said.

Most of the conversation dealt with immigration issues, he said.

Some 20 people showed up at the Alliance’s office in Reno to welcome the students who are walking across the county in support of the act. They followed the speech with a walk to a Cesar Chavez event held at the Rotunda at the Knowledge Center at 3:30 pm.

They will make another presentation Friday at 11 a.m. at the old library at the University of Nevada, Reno, DelaRosa said. They will follow the UNR talk by walking to Little Flower Church in Reno to give another presentation and later continue their journey.
