Wild Island has started preliminary construction on a new attraction called “Zulu,” which allows up to four people to race against each other on mats, head first, down four separate lanes with multiple speed bumps to the finish line.
“Zulu is a direct result of our guests asking for a new attraction, and one where multiple people can ride together,” said Scott Carothers, general manager of Wild Island. “When considering the types and styles of rides, having it appeal to families was high on our list, as well as it had to be cool and provide a thrilling rush for all guests.”
Carothers said that planning for the new attraction began 18-20 months ago, and despite the economic downturn and challenges posed by Washoe County School District approving a proposal to start the school calendar two weeks earlier, Wild Island felt it was important to move ahead with the planned expansion.
The ride is the first at Wild Island to accommodate groups of people, so a family or friends can experience the ride together.
“We’re constantly looking for ways to provide our guests with fresh, new ways to experience our water park and receive value for their dollar,” Carothers said. “The local community has been major supporters of Wild Island since we opened, and we felt strongly that continuing to provide a consistent quality entertainment product was a priority for us.”
Wild Island opened in 1989 and employs around 400 people during the summer and 125 year-round at the Coconut Bowl. The water park sees approximately 180,000 visitors each summer
