RENO — A group of students from Jessie Beck Elementary School will launch the Walking School Bus program starting at 8:15 a.m. Monday. The first stop will be at the corner of Nixon Avenue and Manor Drive in Reno.

The group will then proceed south to Mt. Rose Street, then to Sharon Way, arriving at school at 8:45 a.m.

The Walking School Bus is a group of parent volunteers — bus drivers — who walk to school with the children each morning. They wait for a few minutes at specific stops along the way, helping students cross the street safely and walk to school as a group.

Walking School Bus is designed to improve the health of children through physical activity and to improve air quality. Parent volunteers have been approved through the same standards set forth for all school volunteers.
