RENO — On Friday, rallies are planned in more than 50 U.S. cities over the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ contraception, sterilization and abortion mandate. Rallies in Reno, Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco and more cities will gather at federal buildings under the theme, “Stand Up for Religious Freedom—Stop the HHS Mandate!”
The rally in Reno will start at noon at the Bruce R. Thompson Federal Building, 400 S. Virginia St.
Religious leaders and other public figures will speak out against the HHS mandate, and thousands of Americans of all faiths are expected to participate in these rallies. Scheduled to speak at the Reno rally will be Bishop Randolph Calvo of the Catholic Diocese of Reno, Friar Francisco Nahoe of St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral, Pastor Brent Brooks of Reno Christian Fellowship and Pastor Steve Bond of Summit Christian Church, among others. They will explain why the HHS cannot require all employers to provide free contraceptives, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs through their health plans. The rally is being organized by the Northern Nevada Defense of Religious Liberty Committee.
“Through this new regulation, the federal government requires the Catholic Church to spend its money in a way that forces it to violate its religious principles,” Bishop Randolph Calvo said in a press release. “In effect, it restricts our free exercise of religion.”
