The Grammy Award-winning quartet Bela Fleck & The Flecktones perform at 9 p.m. Saturday in the Celebrity Showroom at John Ascuaga’s Nugget.
Fleck is the only musician to be nominated for Grammys in jazz, bluegrass, pop, country, spoken word, Christian, composition and world music categories. His total count is 11 Grammys won and 27 nominations.
Fleck first united the Flecktones in 1988, ostensibly for a single performance on PBS’
“Lonesome Pine” special. From the start, there was a special kinship between the four musicians, a bond forged in a mutual passion for creativity and artistic advancement. Three breakthrough albums and a whole lot of live dates followed before they parted ways in 1992.
The band reconvened in 2010 to record "Rocket Science," a brand new album that offers a range of influences, including classical, jazz, bluegrass, African music, electric blues and Eastern European folk dances.
“I didn’t want to just get together to play the old music,” Fleck said. “That’s not what the Flecktones are about. Everybody’s full of life and ideas and creativity. I was intrigued by what we could do that we had never done before.”
Bela Fleck and the (original) Flecktones are: Bela Fleck on banjo; Howard Levy on piano and harmonica; Victor Wooten on bass; and Roy “Futureman” Wooten on percussion and drumitar.
Tickets cost $50 and are available online at www.janugget.com or by calling 356-3300.
