Trustees said they wanted more time to research the program to better determine whether they could support such a program during the school district’s current budget crisis.
McQueen football coach Ken Dalton said the high-profile school would make a good candidate for the pilot and noted that many of the athletes and their parents show full support of the program that would last for 15 weeks.
Also on today’s agenda is possible action regarding the replacement of former trustee Lezlie Porter, who died July 22 after a battle with cancer. The board is required to make an appointment for the District F vacancy. A candidate must be a qualified elector who is a resident of the district, which serves the eastern part of Washoe County from Spanish Springs to Geiger Grade.
The appointee will serve until the general election, at which time the successor must be elected for the balance of the expired term.
Trustees will also hear a presentation on Smarthink-ing.com, a tutoring resource for the district’s secondary students.
Smarthinking.com will provide online access to English and Spanish tutoring in all areas of math, science and language arts. An implementation and evaluation process of the program will be completed by a steering committee comprised of the Terry Lee Wells Foundation and WSCD leaders.
The Terry Lee Wells Foundation, a local entity, is providing the funding for the three-year project. If the program is successsful, future funding may be considered. The superintendent’s recommendation is to receive an informational report and a progress update in the future.
The goal of the program is to increase Washoe County’s graduation rate and decrease its dropout rate.
