RENO — Here are a few kind measures for the animals that anyone can duplicate over the holidays:

Leave a message: “Thank you for helping the animals!” is a sweet sentiment to tie to a flower and take to your local Humane Society, SPCA or veterinarian.

Get your kids to help: Invite them to give dog bones, old towels or pet toys to your local animal shelter. Sign them up to volunteer to walk the dogs and pet the cats while they are there.

Set up a family swear jar: Next time anyone in your household lets loose a four-letter word, donate to the jar, with the full container going to the pet charity of your family’s choice. During the holiday season, look for the animal-aid gift trees and secret pet Santa projects around town. Make a donation to spread the joy of the season to animals in our community.
