It was a rough day for northern Nevada girls golf teams during the first day of action at the 4A State Golf Championships, hosted by Bear’s Best Golf Club in Las Vegas.

Northern 4A champion Spanish Springs and runner-up McQueen finished fifth and sixth respectively — out of six teams — after Wednesday’s first round. Spanish Springs had a team total of 359 while McQueen totaled a 386.

Green Valley outclassed the field, posting a total of 317, 16 strokes better than second-place Faith Lutheran.

Today’s second round wraps up the two-day state championship tournament.

Freshman Katrina Prendergast was the lowest Spanish Springs finisher with a score of 81. Another SSHS freshmen, Sammi Sorensen, turned in a score of 87. Trae Jones and Joanna Perry rounded out the Cougars’ team total with scores of 94 and 97.

Stephanie King (100) and Devan Gaddis (107) had the Cougars’ fifth and sixth scores, which did not count toward the SSHS team total.
