The man’s identity has not yet been released by the Nevada Highway Patrol, according to Lt. Carl Johnson. Witnesses told NHP investigators that the southbound vehicle, a Toyota 4-Runner, was driving erratically moments before it drifted off the right side of the road at about 12:30 p.m. The driver then overcorrected back onto the road and then again to the right before rolling over.
The passenger was ejected from the vehicle and killed instantly. The driver, identified only as a 17-year-old male, was last reported to be in stable condition at a local hospital, Johnson said.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Johnson said alcohol is a possible factor though the investigation is continuing.
The vehicle was smashed beyond recognition and the body of the passenger was covered by a yellow tarp about 10 yards from the highway. The vehicle began weaving and then smashed through chain-link fences before crashing into a drainage ditch.
