Once again, to get the required amount of points races in, the Modified division started and finished the night with two main events.
After the dust settled, Shawn Natenstedt reflected on winning the first main.
“That was a little hairy at first, weaving through the traffic, but the track was really good and car awesome” he said. “After the big wreck in Quincy last week, and we didn’t get any practice today, to go out there and win like that was definitely a big plus.”
First on point when the initial Modified main began was Don Childs who quickly surrendered the lead to a charging Jay Sears. Behind the leaders Jake Holland was coming fact while behind him, both Natenstedt and Robert Miller were moving through the traffic.
Two cautions slowed the race but in the end Natenstedt beat Holland to the finish. Then all teams got a few hours to work on their cars and change their set ups.
When the second Modified feature began Scotty Slatter grabbed the lead with Steve McKellip and Tom Purcell giving chase. Then things slowed when Travis Petersen, who was racing with a ruined clutch and a transmission stuck in second gear (The one he usually races in.) spun and brought out a caution.
As soon as racing resumed, McKellip took the point but not far behind a determined Holland was carving his way to the front. Behind them Jay Sears had a good run end when the differential broke for the second time in one evening.
Sitting on the infield he said, “I think the car may have a bent axle.”
When racing resumed Purcell and Holland, who would take the lead had a brief tussle for second. Behind them Robert Miller was moving forward and getting closer.
Up front Holland went into cruise control and stormed away to the victory followed by Miller, a distant second, and Natenstedt, who worked his way to third.
During the trophy presentation Holland said, “At first everybody was all over the place trying to find their own line and I knew where I wanted to be from the first main we ran earlier today. I went to the outside, committed to it but it ended up being about a half a groove lower but the car was just phenomenal as we make some changes from that first main.”
One thing he credited for his performance is running his old 80cc shifter kart at Desert Park Raceway, which is NNKC’s home track.
“That really helped today as I’ve been practicing getting out front and being by myself as well as hitting my marks and being perfect,” he said.
Asked about his points lead at RFR, Natenstedt said, “We got a comfortable lead and we’re also leading the NASCAR state points as well. We still have four more nights of racing so we won’t know about the championship until the last race.”
Kicking off the regular classes were the Pure Stock Minis and Al Bishop soon claimed the point in that feature. While there were two cautions it was Bishop’s night as he was able to keep both Justin Schilling, who finished second and Travis Barr at bay.
Behind the leaders Mikayla Hancock had a good run ending up third while, coming home fifth was 14-year-old Sparks driver Mark Serehio Jr., driving in his very first race.
“The race was really good,” Bishop said afterward. “I just rebuilt a brand new car after hitting the wall four weeks ago and I think it’s ready.”
The Dwarf Cars put on their usual display of almost blinding speed as they little cars turn laps almost as fast as the Modifieds. Roy Peterson was first on point until first Bobby Niles then Bobby Wilson took the lead.
From that point on it became a family battle, as Bobby Wilson was chased by brothers Billy and Race Shelton. Lap after lap they formed a three-car fast train around the oval.
In the end they would finish in that order while their proud father, Vukie Wilson commented it’s the first his sons have finished one-to-three in a race.
“It took a lot of driving as the track is very slick. It doesn’t look it but it was glassy out there,” Bobby said in victory circle.
The most insane race and carnage central for the night was the Pro Stock main. Five cautions slowed the race, which was cut to only 20-laps, and kept the track crew pretty busy as they towed broken cars to the pits.
It took a pair of attempts to get the race going and each time Chris Coclich held the point with the pack-giving chase. However in just a few laps Joe Specchio Jr. took the point and showed everyone his heels.
Then one incident with two cars led to another when Specchio tangled with a lap car and had to leave the race. This came after Specchio and Scott Deutch had contact on the front straight.
Shortly after that Specchio and a lap car tangled sending them to the pits while Deutch wound up on the backstretch with a broken front suspension. In addition two other cars tangled exiting Turn 2.
Al Goss, who is usually a contender, had the misfortune of having three tires go flat, which required a trio of quick pit stops and dropped him back. Coclich had his night end when the left rear wheel decided to separate from his racer.
By now Jesse “The Rocket,” Gonzalez had the lead and at every restart just left the pack in his wake. Behind him there was a many-lap duel between eventual runner-up Dean Cichowicz and Jim Smith for second.
In the end however Gonzalez prevailed by a good margin and added more points to his lead in the division championship.
Asked if he thought the race would ever end, Gonzalez said, “No I didn’t, couldn’t believe we had caution after caution after caution. I got lucky as I went to the high side and everybody went to the bottom, took off and next thing I know there’s carnage everywhere.”
While the Pro Stock mains tend to be fast and somewhat uneventful the Hobby Stock features can turn into wreck central. However on this night they ran green-to-checkered without a caution.
First one point was David Partelow with teammate Dwight Bolton right on his back bumper. These two would be the class of the field as they turned the race into a private battle.
Behind the leaders Sun Valley driver Rick Miller was moving toward the front and soon had his sights on the lead duo. However he would wind up third at the end.
After the top three ran nose-to-tail for a few laps Partelow and Bolton moved away from Miller. With four to go Bolton used the high line and made the winning pass to lead his teammate across the finish line.
“David’s car was a little faster than mine was but it started coming in towards the end and I was able to take him on the outside,” Bolton said. “This is an awesome track and I’ll be every race.”
Then he gave special thanks to his sponsors, Silver Springs Napa, Silver City Auto Body, Carson Valley Signs and to David Vivo, who helped Bolton sort some problems out with the car and had the victory dedicated to him.
OTHER RACING NEWS
•While the Sierra Summer Festival, at the Livestock Events Center and Rodeo ground has been getting a lot of radio time only two motorsport events are listed on the website. And the advertised motocross and LivFast freestyle MX event aren’t listed.
On Friday there is a Demolition Derby, starting at 7:30 p.m., then on Saturday, at 6 p.m., there is a Monster Truck event.
•Racing kicks off Friday at 7 p.m. as the American Valley Speedway in Quincy hosts the annual Dwarf Car regional event. Two days of these little speedsters and other classes on the fast, paper-clip shaped oval.
On Saturday the Lovelock Speedway hosts another of its regular shows with a 7 p.m. start time while the Reno-Fernley Raceway, starting a 6 p.m., hosts a NASCAR show.
Area motocross riders will face off at the Lion’s Fernley track on Sunday, starting around 10 a.m. as SMRA hosts the second round of its Nevada State Championship Series.
•NASCAR’s Las Vegas Trio was at Michigan International Speedway this weekend.
Kyle Busch had to drop out of Saturday’s Camping World Truck race when debris put a hole in his radiator but Brendan Gaughan came from 23rd to finish eighth. In Sunday’s Sprint Cup event Kyle Bush won that event, after starting 17th, while older brother Kurt ended up 34th after being involved in an accident.
