“The show will focus on the community of animal advocates,” Swain said. “The format will be very flexible, depending on what comes up that’s interesting.”
Swain, an 18-year Sparks resident and University of Nevada, Reno graduate, created the radio show earlier this year after spending years as an activist for animal rights through her organization, TrailSafe Nevada. The group focuses mainly on ridding the area of steel-jaw leg hold traps, which ensnare animals while walking and cause severe pain or even death.
One of Swain’s pets, a cat named Trapper Jane, was rescued from a trap by the Nevada Humane Society last year. Swain was such an outspoken opponent of traps that the agency knew to call her about the cat. A few days later, Trapper Jane was welcomed into Swain’s home, sharing space with her dog Sadie.
Swain’s new effort will provide the community with interviews with physicians, the science and research of animals, facts and discoveries, training tips for pets and more.
“There’ll be a lot of fun stuff, including all the cute pet stories you find on YouTube and other places,” she said.
The “Bunny Hugger Hour” is a brokered show through KJFK, a local AM radio station. A brokered show is one in which the client pays the station to broadcast the show. Station Manager Daniel Cook said there are several shows currently broadcast on his station, including San Francisco Giants baseball games.
When asked what prompted her to create the show, Swain said the idea “just clicked.”
“I worked at KUNR in the 1970s as a grad student, and I thought it was very enjoyable,” she said. “I wanted to get the stories out to the media. It seemed like the natural thing to do.”
Swain said it took one meeting with manager Cook before the show received the OK.
“He was very receptive to the idea,” she added.
Although the show is almost ready to go, Swain said any extra source of revenue helps.
“The biggest obstacle is reigning enough revenue to make the show a reality,” she said. “With the economic climate, I know it’s hard for small business to advertise.”
