RENO — August is the final full month to donate blood and be entered to win a new car.

United Blood Services (UBS) is holding a promotion in which all blood donors can enter a raffle to win a new Toyota Corolla that is being provided in partnership with the Northern Nevada Toyota Dealers.

“There’s a hero in all of us,” said Steve Thomas, donor recruitment director of United Blood Services, the area’s nonprofit community blood service provider. “Ordinary people are saving lives every day. They do it before work, after work, while they are on their lunch break or running errands. They have found the hero in themselves by donating blood regularly.”

Potential donors can make an appointment to donate blood by going online at or by calling 324-6454. Donors receive a free cholesterol test with every donation.

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height and weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 must have signed permission from a parent or guardian.

UBS of Reno is the sole blood products supplier to 20 hospitals in northern Nevada and they need approximately 150 blood donations every day to meet the increasing demand for their three principal blood products that are red blood cells, platelets and plasma.
