RENO — The Children’s Cabinet offers unique programs and recently found merit in a book written by Susan Peticolas titled “Surviving a Traumatic Parenthood, Tools to Use After Your Child is Arrested and Goes to Rehab.”

Kathleen Sandoval, the director of The Children’s Cabinet and wife of Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, contacted Peticolas and asked that she edit the book to meet the needs of their clients. Although the first book was written for parents of adult children with addiction issues, Sandoval requested that Peticolas change the boundaries to be applicable for parents of minors. Sandoval also wanted a title that would be welcoming to parents.

Peticolas’ book tries to provide parents with a roadmap to navigate through the negative situations they might face with their children. Peticolas includes exercises to help parents move toward a different way of approaching their child’s negative behavior through changed perspectives, alternate reactions and different boundaries.

“My son first got into serious trouble when he was 16,” Peticolas said in a press release. “I felt as if my life had ended. I had great difficulty moving away from the obsession on my son’s behavior. I was so scared that I was helping him in ways that were prolonging his out of control spiral. These books are a collection of tools that helped me shift my perspective from obsession about my son, to reclaiming my own life and learning to love my son despite his behavior.”

“Been There, Done That! Strategies to Add to Your Parenting Toolbox” is available for sale online at and other book sellers.

Perhaps the best First Lady we have ever had in the Mansion. Thank You! You matter to us, just like NEVADA MATTERS to us all.
