RENO — Dr. James B. Atcheson, an endocrinologist, will be honored by Renown Health at Magic 2011, this year’s Renown Health Foundation gala benefiting Renown Children’s Hospital.

The gala, scheduled for Oct. 15, will be an evening filled with music and success stories from Renown Children’s Hospital. The program also includes the presentation of the Arthur J. Lurie M.D. Distinguished Physician Award, honoring Dr. Atcheson for the difference his work has made in the community.

A specialist in diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism and internal medicine, Atcheson was the first trained endocrinologist in northern Nevada and has been board certified in internal medicine since 1971 and in endocrinology and metabolism since 1973. He has practiced medicine for more than 45 years, and joined Renown Medical Group more than three years ago.

Atcheson is a Reno native. He was educated at the University of Nevada, Reno, and attended medical school at the University of Utah. He completed a medical internship and residency at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He also completed a two-year National Institute for Health fellowship in endocrinology at the University of Utah and has practice in Reno since 1972.

Anyone interested in attending Magic 2011 can contact the Renown Health Foundation at 982-5545. All proceeds from the event will benefit Renown Children’s Hospital.

The Arthur J. Lurie Distinguished Physician Award is given in memory of Dr. Arthur J. Lurie, a respected pioneer in cardiovascular surgery in the area. Dr. Lurie performed the first open heart surgery in northern Nevada at Renown Health in 1977.

Dr. A is an excellent doctor, I'm really glad to see he's being recognized for it. He really goes above and beyond the call of duty. Being born with hormonal issues, I've seen my share of doctors, and he is definately one of the greatest I've ever encountered.
