Denim & Diamonds to help moms in need

RENO — The 29th annual Denim & Diamonds dinner and auction benefitting Casa de Vida will be held this year on Aug. 19 at the Tannenbaum Event Center on Mount Rose Highway.

The event begins at 5 p.m. with cocktails, live entertainment featuring Bad Neighbors, a dinner and a live auction. Proceeds will help fund Casa de Vida, a local nonprofit dedicated to providing personalized and comprehensive services for pregnant and postpartum young women in the community.

“The young women we serve often do not have support systems in their lives to help them as they face the frightening reality of unexpectedly expecting a baby,” said Brigit Sullivan, board president for Casa de Vida. “They need a safe place to learn about motherhood and basic life skills such as how to find a job to support herself and her baby. At Casa de Vida, we provide the help she needs, enabling her to bring her baby into the world surrounded with love, compassion and support.”

Executive Director Mary O’Brien said Casa de Vida has multiple strategies to help these young women in a very stressful and confusing time in their lives.

“Our programs provide an invaluable service to a population in need of guidance and assistance,” she said. “We strive to give our young women the skills and resources to become engaged, positive members of our community. Education is extremely important. Its value cannot be measured, especially when it means helping a young woman find a way to support her family. We don’t want them to only survive; we want them to succeed, to become the best women and mothers they are capable of being.”

Casa de Vida also operates the House of Hope, a transitional home where mothers and babies can live semi-independently. Wanda’s Baby Closet program provides free infant clothing, emergency diapers and formula and other baby items for those in need throughout the community, serving approximately 2,500 clients per year.

Dinner seats for Dinner & Diamonds cost $250 per guest, or $2,000 per table of 10. A shuttle will be available by reservation for transportation to and from the event. For more information, email mary@casadevidareno.org or call 329-1070.
