SPARKS — A woman has been arrested for allegedly dragging a police officer behind a car.

At about 2:15 p.m., Sparks police officers responded to a report of a disturbance in the area of Deer Park. The initial call indicated a man was holding a female against a fence at the park.

Upon arriving, officers found several people and two cars near the intersection. As the first arriving officer began speaking with people at the scene, a woman walked past him toward one of the vehicles. Some of the people on scene alerted the officer that the woman was going to try to leave in one of the police cars.

The officer told the woman, identified as Arletha Banks, a 49-year-old Sparks resident, to stop. Banks continued toward the car and began to get in the driver’s side. The officer tried to pull her away from the car, but she got into the car, and despite continued orders from the officer, began to drive away. The officer was dragged about 20 feet, and put out a radio call for immediate help from other officers.

The officer deployed a Taser, which was partially effective. Banks then tried to get out of the passenger side of the car. The officer was able to run around to the passenger side of the car and with the assistance of a citizen who was passing by, take Banks into custody.

Further investigation found that Banks was holding her domestic partner against the fence, and that the couple was in the midst of a breakup. Also, a physical fight had occurred earlier in the day between the two at their residence in Sparks. Banks was charged with battery on a peace officer with use of a deadly weapon, coercion, domestic battery and obstructing an officer. Her bail was set at $15,000 cash only.

The officer, whose name is not being released, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
