RENO — Connie Mickey contacted Nevada Humane Society’s Animal Help Desk asking for help for her mother’s beloved dog, Duffy, who needs a life-saving surgery that could cost as much as $4,000.

Connie got Duffy, a 1-year-old Yorkie/pug mix, as a companion animal for her mother who has suffered two major strokes and is unable to leave the house except for doctors’ appointments.

Recently, Duffy started acting strangely — like she was going blind — so she was rushed to a veterinarian, who diagnosed her with a portosystemic shunt. This is a condition that floods her body with toxins because her liver cannot effectively filter those toxins out of her blood after she eats. This, in turn, causes severe neurologic symptoms such as intermittent blindness, pacing and circling.  She is currently on medications and a special diet to ward off the symptoms. However, she requires surgery to fix her malfunctioning liver in order to survive.

Mickey and her family are determined to save Duffy and with the assistance of the NHS Animal Help Desk, they put a plan into action to raise the funds to cover the veterinary expenses. Sierra Veterinary Specialists will perform the surgery and doctors believe Duffy has a very high probability of recovery. The clinic has set up an account on behalf of Duffy so that people and organizations can donate directly to cover the cost of the veterinary services.

Donations can be mailed directly to: Sierra Veterinary Specialists, 932  Ryland Ave., Reno, NV 89502; or called into the clinic at 358-8555 (account number 6855-1).
