RENO — Police made an arrest and pressed felony charges against Marcos Hernandez, 22, who was involved in a battery case last year.

On October 24, 2010, officers of the Reno Police Department responded to a report of a fight on East Moana Lane. Upon arriving, they found two victims that were bleeding profusely from the head and mouth. Officers learned that a family had been sitting in their home and on their porch, enjoying an evening after a family wedding. Several of their out-of-state family members were also in town to celebrate the event.

A male and female suspect walked by their residence and were involved in a verbal argument. This drew the attention of the residents at the home and by merely looking in their direction, the suspects began verbally assaulting and challenging the residents to fight. The residents did their best to avoid a confrontation but were attacked by both suspects and eventually a third suspect, who had come from a neighboring apartment complex.

An adult male and female resident were attacked and fought off the suspects, defending themselves in their own front yard. One of the suspects displayed a knife, threatening the residents. A male suspect picked up two bricks from the front yard and threw them directly at the residents. One brick hit an adult male on the head, causing a large laceration and a fractured skull. He struggled to maintain consciousness while the suspects continued to attack them.

The other brick struck a 16-year-old girl in the face, who was standing in the living room, uninvolved in the altercation. The juvenile sustained major trauma to her face, suffering a laceration that severed her upper lip, a fractured jaw and subsequent oral and plastic surgery. The suspects fled the scene and for months the police attempted to locate their whereabouts and involvement.

The police involved in the case as well as the Regional Gang Unit exhausted all efforts investigating this case.

Several weeks ago, Regional Gang Unit detectives received a break in the case, leading to the arrest of Hernandez, a local gang member, for felony battery charges.

This investigation continues and anyone else that may have information regarding this crime is encouraged to contact Secret Witness at 322-4900 or the Regional Gang Unit at 334-3852.
