Konrad Schmidt finished with four hits and fell just a triple short of the cycle Sunday afternoon, but the Iowa Cubs defeated the Reno Aces, 14-11, in front of 8,562 fans at Aces Ballpark.

In a game that saw 25 runs and 33 hits, the Cubs came out on top after scoring six runs over the final two frames to seal the comeback victory. Reno led 6-3 after the first, only to see Iowa storm back to tie the game at eight in the top of the sixth.

After the Aces regained the lead with two in the sixth and one in the seventh, Iowa put up four runs in the eighth and added two insurance runs in the ninth. The Aces could not mount a ninth-inning comeback off former Aces reliever Scott Maine, and saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

Both starters tossed five innings of work, although neither figured in the decision. Aces starter Micah Owings surrendered six earned runs, while I-Cubs starter J.R. Mathes allowed eight runs — five earned — on 10 hits.

The loss went to Jason Urquidez (2-1), who allowed the eventual game-winning run.

Thomas Diamond (1-3) earned the victory for Iowa, while Maine (7) tossed two shutout frames to earn the save.

Schmidt went 4-for-5 Sunday, with a home run, double and two singles. He was one of five Aces hitters to drive in a pair of runs. Collin Cowgill and Cody Ransom homered, as well, and Owings finished 2-for-2 with a double and a triple.

Reno and Iowa lock horns again tonight, with RHP Kevin Mulvey (2-2, 8.92 ERA) getting the nod for Reno. Iowa will counter with RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (2-1, 5.34 ERA). First pitch is set for 5:35 p.m. PT and is the first of two-consecutive Washoe County School District Education and Family Days at Aces Ballpark.
