RENO — Washoe County’s first known “disc toss” ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on May 21 to celebrate the grand opening of the region’s first public disc golf course: the new Ranch Disc Golf Course at the County’s Rancho San Rafael Regional Park.

Members of the Reno Disc Golf Association will be on hand to help commemorate their completion of the course in conjunction with Washoe County. The association worked with Washoe County’s Department of Regional Parks and Open Space to design and build the 18-hole disc golf course at Rancho San Rafael.

An open tournament will take place following the ceremony. Interested players can sign up for the tournament on site or visit for details.

“I saw how important this sport was to the community when I first became involved with it two years ago,” Reno Disc Golf Association President Skot Meyer said. “Disc golf provides a very cost-effective form of outdoor recreation that may be enjoyed by the whole family. It was no surprise to me to find that disc golf is our nation’s fastest growing sport.”

To get to the course, use the north entrance to Rancho San Rafael Regional Park off Virginia Street north of McCarran Boulevard.
