It took a while to get going but there was no stopping the Spanish Springs softball team once it started firing on all cylinders.

The Cougars rapped out 20 hits in their 15-0 romp at Galena in Northern 4A league action Monday in a postponed game from Saturday.

“The first couple innings we didn’t hit the ball that well, and then we adjusted,” SSHS softball coach Jeff Davidson said. “About the third inning, we started hitting the ball hard down and hitting the ball square. I’d like them to start a little earlier, but they pretty much had a couple days off before they played today. It just took them a couple innings to adjust and once they did, they were fine.”

The game was scoreless after the first two innings, but the bats came alive in the third when Sydney Darby belted out the first of her two home runs on the day. Darby drove in five runs with her two long balls. Her two-run homer was part of Spanish Springs’ four-run third inning.

The Cougars added two more runs in the top of the fourth to go ahead 6-0.

But the Grizzlies had no answer for the Purple and Silver in the top of the fifth. Darby and Brette Lawrence went back-to-back with a three-run home run and solo shot as the big blows in the nine-run rally.

Eight of Spanish Springs’ nine starters recorded a hit.

Bella Rovens, Danica Arterburn and Lawrence all had three hits to lead the Cougars’ offense. Rovens and Arterburn also drove in a run.

Dani Smith knocked in a trio of runs with two hits. Myrissa Prince and Julianna Waller both added two hits apiece.

Arterburn worked four innings in the circle, allowing three hits, while striking out seven and walking one to pick up the win.

Spanish Springs (22-2, 10-0 in Northern 4A) is at Bishop Manogue for a 3:45 p.m. first pitch Thursday.
