ELKO — On Friday, the Bureau of Land Management, Elko District Office released the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) analyzing potential impacts for the Newmont Mining Corporation’s proposed Genesis Project in Eureka County, Nev.

The Genesis Project is a proposed amendment to the plan of operations for the Genesis-Bluestar Operations, an ongoing gold mining project on the Carlin Trend. The proposed Genesis Project includes expanding the existing Genesis open pit, backfilling the Bluestar and Beast pits and then partially backfilling the Genesis pit as mining progresses.

Most of the disturbance, about 1,092 acres, would occur on existing disturbance; only 43 acres of new disturbance is proposed. The BLM will not make a decision on the proposed action described in the EIS until at least May 15.

The FEIS is available at the Elko BLM website at http://blm.gov/rv5c. Click on “Genesis Project Final EIS” beneath the title “In the Spotlight.”

A limited number of print and CD versions of the draft and final EIS are available at the BLM’s Elko District Office.
