On Opening Day, North Valleys made quick work of Sparks, handing its Rail City foe a 10-run mercy rule defeat. Apparently, a lot has changed in the last month.

Sparks dumped North Valleys twice Thursday, hanging losses of 7-4 and 11-6 on the Reno school in a non-league prep baseball doubleheader.

North Valleys scored all four of its runs in the top of the first inning in Game 1. Sparks coach Greg Vasko had to make a pitching change with two outs in the first and it paid off. Reliever Tyler Dresbach went the rest of the way, tossing six and 1/3 scoreless innings en route to victory.

Dresbach gave up just two Panthers hits in his long relief stint while whiffing six and walking three. He retired 17 of the 22 hitters he faced.

Sparks scored two runs in each of the second, fourth and fifth innings before adding a single score in the sixth.

Dennis Morelli mashed a two-run homer in the fifth and Martin Jordan had a solo dinger in the sixth for Sparks (10-5).

In Game 2, the host Railroaders trailed 3-0 as they came up for their turn in the bottom of the third. Sparks quickly knotted the score at 3-3 and never trailed again.

The SHS club tacked on five runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to account for its 11 runs.

Morelli ripped a two-run double in the third. Kirk Putman had a two-run triple and Jordan a solo homer in the fourth. Jared Longland rapped out a two-run double in the sixth.

Longland paced the Sparks offense, which finished with 12 hits in Game 2. Longland was 4-for-4 at the plate in the second win.
