2011 snowshoe season with the Tahoe Rim Trail

INCLINE VILLAGE — The 2011 Snowshoe Season with the Tahoe Rim Trail Association is under way but there are still plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the crisp and clean air.

Join the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for free guided snowshoe treks every Saturday through the end of March. These snowshoe hikes are great for all abilities and shorter hikes are appropriate for kids. Discover this fun and easy way to exercise and socialize during the winter months in the Tahoe Basin.

Advance registration is required for snowshoe treks. Online registration is now required for all TRTA programs and can be completed on the TRTA website at www.tahoerimtrail.org. For more information call 775-298-0012 or e-mail Tom at programs@tahoerimtrail.org.

Snowshoe hikes include:

• 10 a.m. Saturday: Free Guided Hike to Page Meadows and Snow Detectives Winter Animal Tracking Family Hike. Enjoy an easy 3-4 mile guided hike through the meandering trails of Page Meadows. Starts at the top of Silver Tip Drive outside of Tahoe City. Or join the TRTA staff in the Tahoe Meadows to discover the techniques and fun of winter animal tracking. Uncover the hidden world of winter animal survival by following their scat, signs and tracks. Starts near the TRT interpretive loop in the north Tahoe Meadows.

• 4 p.m. Saturday: TRTA Sweetheart Sunset Hike. Enjoy a romantic and picturesque view of Lake Tahoe as the sun sets behind its west shore’s mountains. Starts near the south end of the Tahoe Meadows.

• 10 a.m. Feb. 19: Free Guided Hike to Castle Rock. The TRTA continues its snowshoeing season with an easy, 4-mile trek to Castle Rock. Located near the southern end of the lake, this hike is perfect for South Shore residents. Starts at the Kingsbury Grade North trailhead off of North Benjamin Drive.

• 10 a .m. Feb. 26: Free Guided Hike to Tahoe Meadows. Join the TRTA and USFS for an easy 3-4 mile hike from the Tahoe Meadows to the crest of Lake Tahoe Basin ridge. Treat yourself to a breathtaking view of the lake and enjoy a morning of exercise in the winter air. Starts at the south end of the Tahoe Meadows.
